The sky was pitch black with clouds, each casting its ominous shadow across the land. Lightning streaked across the horizon, blinding to the sight, and the thunder that followed shook the land as if some great giant were beating a war drum. Then the first drops of the rain, cool and refreshing at first, but soon turning into a creature of its own, beautiful and deadly at the same time. A drop found its way to the nose of a young wolf laying on the hillside. His eyes peered open and he sprung to his feet. How could he have fallen asleep now? His grey ears perked up, alert to the sound of peoples voices in the distance, though they werent too far off. If he didnt leave soon, the humans were sure to find him, and if that happened, well, he didnt want to think about that. He took off at an astounding pace, all sorts of thoughts racing through his head, the least of which was where he would stay for the night. Hed be lucky to find a tree to hide in, but he was used to that by now. However, it wasnt always like this. He had been happy once upon a time.

The sounds of children playing in the streets could be heard through Kiras open window. He squinted as the sun shown in his eyes, and he quickly moved to get dressed. He ran outside wit the kind of enthusiasm you would expect from a ten year old pup. He longed to play with the other children of the city, but he knew that they wouldnt let him join in. They never did, and he couldnt quite understand it. Even the adults ignored him whenever possible. No one set eyes on him if they could help it, and he was never called on in school. It was hard for him sometimes. He couldnt ask his parents about it because he was an orphan, abandoned at a very young age. But there was one person who would listen to him, the person who took him in when he was left on the sidewalk on that dark night. He was a human of astounding age. It was said that he had lived for centuries, but it could not be proven, and if you looked at him you would think that he was only around forty or so years. He lived in a house in the corner of the city, and that was where Kira was headed. He went there every day, rain or shine, and was always accepted with open arms.
He ran up to the faded green door and gave a loud knock before turning the handle and going in. But when he opened the door, out stepped five humans in black suits and ties, polished in appearance, but Kira sensed something about them. Something evil. They hurried on down the street, and moments later a black limousine rolled by at a high speed. Kira hurried inside to see if everything was ok, and there was old man Methuselah, sitting in his chair as usual. Umm, is everything ok, sir? Kira asked politely, and Methuselah sighed. Yes, yes Kira, everything just fine. Those men were just asking me some questions, thats all. But what about you, are you okay? Oh, uh, yeah, Im ok, thanks
.Methuselah, Ive got a question. Ok kid, ask away. Well, as long as I can remember, everyone has ignored me, and I cant remember the last time I played with any of the other kids
Whats wrong with me? Well, I knew this was coming sooner or later. Kira, you are a very special pup. Youre destined to do great things. The other people, they dont see it, but I do. They dont understand you like I do. But thats no reason to hate them either. They just dont know you and they wont give you a chance. But promise me one thing. Promise me that you will never hurt anyone just because they dont like you, okay? Okay sir, I promise. Good, so what do you want to do now? And they talked until the sun set, and Kira headed back home. It stayed this way for a long time, and for that time Kira was happy enough to spend his days talking to an old man, but those days were soon to end.
Several years past, and Kira grew into a respectable young wolf. Methuselah remained unchanged through these many years, but that was to be expected. The men in the black suits had been seen around more and more recently, and rumors were flying about a government take over, but no one really paid any attention to them. Then came that dark day.
Kira woke to a blaring radio broadcast. The humans had taken over the government, and all animals were being told to report to the nearest town hall. Kira sensed something was wrong with this, and immediately headed towards Methuselahs house. When it came into sight, he spotted the limo parked in front of it, and hid in the bushes nearby. Soon the men in the black suits emerged, one wiping his hand on a rag. He threw the rag to the ground, and they got into their car and drove off. Kira ran up and grabbed the rag, and he saw that it was soaked in blood. He ran inside in a panic, and he saw Methuselah lying on the floor, battered a bruised, with blood running down his face. He rushed to his side, desperate to help. What happened here?! Who were they, and why did they do this to you?! Kira.. Methuselah spoke between coughs of blood, you must hide. They were looking for you, I didnt tell them where you were, but they may come back. You must go! Looking for me
.so
all this I my fault then. I see. Well, they will pay for this, I promise. Hang in there Methuselah, Ill be back soon. Without waiting to hear what Methuselah said, he sprinted out the door, giving chase to his guardians attackers, a ferocious blood lust burning in his blue eyes.
He soon caught scent of the men from the rag that the one had used, and he was sprinting through the city at at least fifty miles per hour. It wasnt long before he reached a large black building that appeared to reach to the sky. Kira looked around and found a nearby building with a fire escape and climbed to the top. Then, with a running start, he leapt across the gap between the buildings, narrowly landing on a window sill. He then began his ascent. He jumped from ledge to ledge, looking in the windows as he went, until he spotted the men. He found an open window and climbed in, and soon found himself surrounded by soldiers with automatic guns. The five men walked up, and the tallest one began to speak. So, you found us, or should I say we found you. I assumed you would follow us. As a matter of fact, I counted on it. You see, Kira, you are a very, VERY special little wolf. You could be a very valuable asset to us. Of course, to get to you we had to sacrifice one of our most beloved members, but he was becoming a nuisance anyway. Youll all pay for what youve done to him! You wont get away with this. And when Methuselah gets better, hell come and rescue me, youll see! Oh my poor delusional little wolf. Your master wont be coming to save you. You see, we poisoned him. He should be dead by now, actually. No! Youre lying! Im terribly sorry, but this is the complete truth. Hes dead, and theres nothing you can do about it. Well see about that! exclaimed Kira, and his claws shot to the nearest guard, ripping out his throat. Before the others could react he had his rifle, and he had downed the next three with quick bursts. He grabbed the first body and threw it, knocking down the remaining three, whom he dispersed with three quick shots, each to the head. He then turned his focus to the men in the suits. But before he could pull the trigger, he was tackled by a behemoth. He looked up to his attacker, and it was Rhino, a brute of a beast with a heart as black as his eyes. Before he could react, the great arm swung, knocking him through the glass, into a perilous freefall. As the ground grew ever closer, his thought turned to Methuselah. It couldnt end like this, he had to live, he had to avenge him. And then everything went black.

The art of love is largely the art of persistence.
